Wow, he did it again. Chris made winning his second-straight title look easy. I’m still trying to figure out if his competitors cried ‘uncle’ along the way. Now, the big question is, can he three-peat?
Ten Questions for the Champ
While Chris was busy celebrating today, he carved out some time to answer questions for the Fayettenam media.
For those of us looking up to you (way up), what’s it feel like to be the repeat champion in the league?
Chris: It feels great to be on top again. As you know I’m a really competitive guy, so winning something I put quite a bit of time into is really satisfying. I think repeating is harder than winning it the first time, so there is a new sense of accomplishment.
Did you have any doubts going into the playoffs?
Chris: I was pretty confident that I had the most well-rounded team going into the playoffs. I had a few doubts facing J.B. He has a few guys that are capable of scoring in the 30s, but after I took the lead in the first week of that match-up I was feeling pretty good about hoisting the trophy again.
Were you surprised about J.B.’s dropoff in the first round only to crush it in the next round?
Chris: I wasn’t too surprised because as great as his team is, it is pretty top-heavy and there is a wide range of outcomes possible with top-heavy teams. For him to score 200 one week and 130 the next is always in play. I just got lucky I didn’t get the 200 version because when his team is on it is the best in the league.
Was there any point during the season you thought you’d be happy just to get to the final four?
Chris: I think expectations have to reflect the talent of the team. To come off a championship season and not make it to the finals again, would have been really disappointing. But I’m sure there will be future seasons where just getting into the playoffs will be the biggest goal.
You beat JoeRyan by a wide margin. Deep down, is it more interesting when the games are closer?
Chris: Joe has a great team, he has made the playoffs every year of our league which is no small feat. So when you play great teams you really don’t want close games. I was hoping to be up 30-40 going into week 2 and fortunately, I was able to make that happen. The less anxiety the better if you’re in my seat.
Do you feel vindicated that Kamara had a big game and even outscored Gurley?
Chris: Time will tell on that trade. I did think Kamara would outscore Gurley in the 4 weeks of playoffs and for that not to happen is disappointing. But that trade for me was not just about this playoff run, I am more confident in Kamara’s health over the next 3 years that Gurley’s. I won’t be able to answer this question in full until this next season is over. At the moment it seems like I gave up too much and Drew won the trade.
Now what? Do you follow football news in the off-season, or do you turn it off?
Chris: My Packers are in the playoffs so I will be following football very closely for the next month or so. After the Super Bowl, I won’t pay any attention to it until the draft, and then after the draft, I don’t pay any attention to it until about 2-3 weeks before our draft. Then I will fire up the research center in prep for that.
Going into the fourth season, what is your biggest need? Will you address that through the draft or trades?
Chris: Going into the fourth season I think my starting lineup will be very strong again but RB’s don’t have a long shelf life and if David Johnson doesn’t get traded to a favorable team I could be looking very shallow at RB outside of my top two guys. I’ll be hunting RB’s pretty hard, but in the draft, I think it’s always best to take the best player available. So I may have to roll the dice with the RB’s I have.
What team looks great going into next year?
Chris: I think NEEDTOBREES HARD KNOCKS is only a piece or two away from being scary. If he can hit a home run in the draft, or if a few of his young guys take that next step, I think you’re going to see him in the playoffs next year with a shot at making the finals.
Finally, what’s your favorite podcast?
Chris: Is this even a question? The 2G’s of course.
